About Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda)

Volcanoes National Park, located in the Northern Province of Rwanda, borders the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. Established in 1925, it is part of the Virunga Mountains, a chain of five volcanoes: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. The park spans rugged terrain ranging from tropical rainforests to alpine meadows, providing diverse habitats for numerous rare species. Most notably, the park is a sanctuary for the critically endangered mountain gorilla, making it one of the best places in the world for gorilla trekking. Visitors may also encounter golden monkeys, giant forest hogs, and hundreds of bird species. Beyond wildlife, the park’s volcanic peaks offer challenging hikes and climbing routes, including the demanding ascent of Mount Karisimbi, Rwanda’s highest volcano. Historical significance is tied to the park’s origins in gorilla conservation pioneering, led by famed primatologist Dian Fossey. Current recreation involves guided gorilla and golden monkey tours, volcano hikes, cultural excursions to nearby communities, and nature walks. The park’s visitor appeal is enhanced by its scenic views, rich biodiversity, and conservation success story. The rugged landscape, combined with the thrill of close wildlife encounters, makes it a top destination for outdoor enthusiasts interested in wildlife photography, trekking, and experiencing East Africa’s volcanic highlands.
